Who was Clifton E. Brooks Sr.?

Picture
Clifton E. Brooks Sr. (1922–2021)
Tuskegee Airman | Cryptologist | Community Leader

Clifton E. Brooks Sr. lived a life defined by service, integrity, and quiet excellence. Born on March 12, 1922, and passing at the age of 99 on December 24, 2021, Mr. Brooks was a proud member of the Tuskegee Airmen, the groundbreaking group of African American servicemen whose courage and discipline helped change the course of American military history and the nation itself.
During World War II, Sgt. Brooks served as a cryptographer under Colonel Benjamin O. Davis Jr., commander of the Tuskegee Airmen. His mission was to decode incoming and outgoing military communications—work that required extraordinary precision, intelligence, and trust. As a cryptologist responsible for handling highly sensitive coded information, his role demanded strict confidentiality, technical skill, and unwavering discipline.
Because of the sensitive nature of this work, Sgt. Brooks carried immense responsibility. His orders were to protect the decoding equipment and classified information at all costs—even if it meant destroying the equipment to prevent it from falling into enemy hands. Thankfully for his family, he never had to face that ultimate decision.
Like many Tuskegee Airmen, Mr. Brooks carried out his service with humility and rarely spoke about the significance of his work. Yet his dedication reflected the same quiet excellence and discipline that defined the Tuskegee Airmen as a whole.
After serving his country honorably, Sgt. Brooks returned home and built a life rooted in hard work, family, and community. He worked for many years at the Kelly-Springfield Tire Company in Cumberland, Maryland, where he remained until his retirement.
Beyond his military career, Clifton E. Brooks Sr. was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, known in his community for his honesty, strong work ethic, and commitment to helping others. He lived not for recognition, but for purpose—serving his family, his faith, and his community with the same quiet strength that defined his military service.
His impact on his community was profound. In recognition of his service and legacy, a sign welcoming visitors into Keyser, West Virginia was dedicated in his honor just across the bridge from Maryland. In addition, the South End Park in Keyser was renamed Brooks Park, ensuring that his name and contributions will continue to inspire future generations.
Clifton E. Brooks Sr. passed away on December 24, 2021, just three months shy of his 100th birthday.
